Frequently Asked Questions

What input formats does the bulk converter accept?

Paste ISBNs in any combination of separators: comma-separated, space-separated, tab-separated, or one per line. Quoted ISBNs (e.g. "0525536221") are handled correctly. Non-ISBN text mixed into your input is passed through unchanged, so you can paste an entire spreadsheet column or catalogue export without preprocessing. The converter detects each valid ISBN, converts it, and leaves everything else exactly as entered.

What happens to non-ISBN text in my input?

Non-ISBN text is left exactly as it was entered. Only valid ISBN-10, ISBN-13, EAN-13, and UPC-A codes are converted. Book titles, catalogue numbers, notes, and ISBNs can all be pasted together and only the ISBNs will be touched. ISBNConverter.com's bulk converter is designed to handle messy, real-world data without requiring cleanup first.

When should I use the bulk converter instead of the file upload tool?

Use the bulk converter when you have a raw list of ISBNs (copied from a spreadsheet, a CMS export, or a plain text source) and want fast in-browser results without downloading a processed file. Use the file upload tool when you need the converted ISBNs inserted back into the file structure at a specific column position, such as alongside the original values in an Excel spreadsheet.

How many ISBNs can I convert at once?

There is no hard limit on the number of ISBNs per request. Batches of thousands work reliably. Each converted ISBN consumes one credit. Free accounts include 100 credits per month; paid credits are available in packs of 10,000 for $10 with no subscription or expiry.

Why are some ISBN-13s not converting to ISBN-10?

ISBN-13 codes with a "979" prefix are outside the addressable range of ISBN-10. There is no valid 10-digit equivalent for these codes, so the converter leaves them unchanged rather than producing an invalid result. Only "978"-prefixed ISBN-13s have a valid ISBN-10 counterpart. The 979 prefix was introduced to expand capacity beyond the 978 namespace; titles assigned 979 ISBNs can be looked up on Open Library and other catalogs by their full 13-digit code.
